Characters of Nurse Witch Komugi

All but a few characters return from SoulTaker, appearing as bizarre parodies of themselves.
Komugi Nakahara
Voiced By: Haruko Momoi (Japanese), Jocelyne Loewen (English)
The main character, a 17 year old cosplayer, who transforms into Nurse Witch Komugi. She works for a talent agency called Kiri Pro, where she acts and endorses products (usually while wearing silly looking costumes). She can be very hyper and silly, which usually gets her into trouble with her bosses. Her nurse witch costume is a cross between a nurse uniform and a rabbit costume. The running joke of her flat chest is used ad nauseam. Also, Komugi has a crush on Kyosuke.
Mugi-maru
Voiced By: Yuji Ueda (Japanese), Luci Christian (English)
Komugi’s ’side-kick’, a perverted rabbit-like creature from Vaccine World who detects viruses.
Kyousuke Date
Voiced By: Mitsuki Saiga (Japanese), Brad Swaile (English)
A famous singer, working for Kiri Pro’s rival company. He is also Komugi’s crush. In Soultaker, he was the protagonist of the series.
Koyori Kokubunji
Voiced By: Ikue Otani (Japanese), Kira Vincent-Davis (English)
Koyori is a friend of Komugi and works with her as a model and cosplayer. However, from time to time, Koyori will lose consciousness and transform into Magical Maid Koyori, her evil form. Koyori will then infect innocent people with viruses. She could be considered Komugi’s rival. She often gets frustrated at being constantly defeated by Komugi and Mugimaru. After a time, she will revert to her good form again with no memory of anything she did in her evil form.
Posokichi
Voiced By: Ai Shimizu (Japanese), Monica Rial (English)
Magical Maid Koyori’s ’side-kick’, a quiet raccoon. In epidode 4, Magical Maid spends months training Posokichi to speak.
Yui Kirihara
Voiced By: Akiko Hiramatsu (Japanese), Lisa Ann Beley (English)
Ms. Yui is the president of Kiri Pro. She often scolds Komugi when she messes up (which is quite often). She is 29 years old, and once was a well-known and famous idol, and she fell in love with a president from another talent agency, Mr. Richard. Everything was going well for her, until Richard announced to the press that he was in love with Ms. Yui’s manager on the same day Ms. Yui was going to announce her engagement to Richard. She was heart broken and humiliated, so she quit the idol business and became the president of her own talent agency.
Shiro Mibu
Voiced By: Masaya Onosaka (Japanese), Trevor Devall (English)
Shiro is Komugi’s manager. He usually has a laid-back, relaxed personality, but when Komugi skips out on her job (usually to become Magical Nurse and save the city), then it’s best to not cross his path. He also will get stuck with Komugi’s job until she returns, usually wearing one of her costumes. Although he yells at Komugi, he sticks up for her when Ms. Yui scolds her for her disappearances and mess-ups. He has an assortment of nicknames for Komugi, including “Little Shit” or “Little piss-ant girl” (English translation). It’s also been shown that he works well with computers, for he designed and manages Komugi’s personal fan site for her.
Megumi Akiba
Voiced By: Atsuko Enomoto (Japanese), Jessica Boone (English)
Megumi also works at Kiri Pro, and is Komugi’s bitter rival. Megumi, unlike Komugi, has much sex appeal, and she is often the one to tease Komugi about her flat chest, to which Komugi retorts with an insult such as “Hooter’s Girl” to insult her enormous chest. Megumi is an image girl, posing for center folds and posters, although she also has an interest in acting.
Runa Tokisaka
Voiced By: Michiko Neya (Japanese), Cynthia Martinez (English)
Runa is a child star at Kiri Pro. She normally seems calm and cute, but she occasionally makes rude comments, usually about Komugi. She, like Megumi, calls Komugi a flat-chest and a pseudo-Idol. She takes advantage of her cute appearance to earn more money.
Asuka Sakurai
Voiced By: Yukari Tamura (Japanese), Shelley Calene-Black (English)
Asuka was once a movie actress, but was demoted to Kiri Pro. Komugi thinks it’s an honor to have a professional actor working with her, but in reality it means Asuka is close to losing her job as an actress. Asuka works hard at her job at Kiri Pro, and is usually more responsible than Komugi or Megumi. She doesn’t complain much, but can lose her temper just as well as the others. Unlike the other Kiri Pro employees, Asuka respects Komugi and forms a friendship with her. In Magikarte Z, it is revealed that Asuka hates Osaka with quite a passion.

Who is Nurse Witch Komugi

Nurse Witch Komugi (????????????????? N?su Witchi Komugi-chan Majikarute?, majikarute is a pun on “magical” and “karte”, a German loanword used to refer to medical records) is an OVA series, which lasted for five episodes (six if episode 2.5 that appeared in the middle of the series is included). All five episodes were released on DVD in North America by ADV Films. A two episode long sequel OVA series was created, Nurse Witch Komugi-chan Magicarte Z.

The story of the anime itself is basically a parody of both the The SoulTaker anime series and the Magical Girl anime genre. It revolves around Komugi Nakahara, a cosplay idol who turns into Magical Nurse Witch Komugi when trouble is around.

While the English dub of the show was adapted by ADV, the original The SoulTaker dub was not. In a rare move, ADV recalled many of the voice actors from The Ocean Group dub of The SoulTaker to reprise their roles in Nurse Witch Komugi-chan to keep consistency between the two dubs.

Reception of Mark Williams

The storyline which saw Mark become addicted to cocaine was criticised for its lack of realism by Daily Mirror writer Jim Shelley. He stated that although Mark had previously been one of the more normal characters in the show, there was no obvious reason behind his descent into cocaine addiction, deeming the storyline: “TV crack - instant, mind-altering, utterly addictive.”[19] The Stage writer Mark Wright examined the cocaine addiction storyline in contrast to complaints from drinks industry body the Portman Group that a scene featuring characters Maddy Young and Sam Strachan downing tequila shots was “highly irresponsible”,[20] writing: “To put this storm in a shot glass into perspective, the offending scene took place in the same episode that Mark Williams was in the gents chopping out a line of cocaine. Yes, Mark Williams played by Robert Powell. He was Jesus, you know! Now who’s talking social responsibility?”[21]

The character has been generally well received by fans of the show. In the 2006 official fan awards, the storyline surrounding daughter Chrissie’s true paternity was awarded 4th best of series 8, and Mark and Tricia were voted the series 5th Best Couple.[22] In 2007, episode “One For My Baby” in which Mark’s wife Tricia died, was voted best episode of series 9, which Mark and Tricia this time voted the series 3rd Best Couple.[23]

In popular culture of Mark Williams

The 17 November 2006 Children in Need charity telethon included a segment featuring the Holby City cast performing a version of Hung Up by Madonna.[17] Powell as Mark featured prominently in this sketch, singing and dancing alongside many of his Holby City co-stars.[18]

Life after Tricia of Mark Williams

Mark struggled to cope following Tricia’s death, and despite being promoted to the position of Nursing Consultant, went on to develop a cocaine addiction in 2007. Initially he refused to recognise that he had a problem, but when Chrissie was threatened by his drug dealer, he accepted that he needed help. Friend and colleague Elliot Hope provided support, while Chrissie’s boyfriend, Stuart McElroy, had Mark checked into rehab under the guide of attending a resuscitation refresher course. With their support, Mark was able to break his dependency, although he again became disillusioned when it transpired that Stuart was an alcoholic. In a drunken rage, he attacked Chrissie, slashing her face open with a scalpel. Chrissie decided to depart from Holby in order to recover, leaving Mark alone.

Remarriage Tricias death of Mark Williams

Although Mark was desperate for Tricia to have chemotherapy, she proved reluctant, deciding that her previous cycles had been too grueling. Terrified that he might lose her, Mark proposed that they remarry. Initially, Tricia turned him down, with Sharon Maughan explaining: “She doesn’t like the thought of saying ’til death do us part’, knowing she’s dying. Tricia’s still in denial and doesn’t want to admit she hasn’t got long. She feels everything is accelerating out of her control.”[15] However, following an incident which saw the two characters taken hostage at work, Tricia rethought her decision. “It scares her and makes her realise that Mark’s always been there for her; he offers a safe place away from the crazy world that’s out there”.[15] The two remarried in the hospital peace garden in episode “Now or Never”, with Chrissie and colleague Lola Griffin as witnesses. Tricia then underwent experimental surgery to excise her cancer, and she and Mark were delighted when it appeared to have been successful. They planned a second honeymoon in New York, however, en-route to the airport were involved in a road traffic accident. Tricia suffered serious injuries, and although she was stabilized in theatre by Diane Lloyd, her condition soon thereafter worsened, leaving Mark and Chrissie conflicted over how to continue with her treatment. Maughan explained: “Mark and Chrissie have completely opposing views. He’s desperate to do anything he can and wants to put Tricia on a life support machine, but Chrissie is saying ‘Stop, she’s never going to be the same’.”[16] Ultimately, the two agreed to let Tricia pass away in peace.
